What is Sun Protection Factor?

Sun protection factor, also known as SPF, refers to the value determined experimentally by exposing the subject to the UVB spectrum (simulating the noon sun) indoors. In general, the SPF of a test product can be obtained by dividing the amount of light that causes redness in sun-protected skin by the amount of light that causes redness in unprotected skin.

In Vitro SPF Testing

EN ISO 24443:2012

EN ISO 24443:2012 is a standard method for in vitro determination of UVA protection. It has been recommended to determine the UVA protection factor and the critical wavelength for cosmetic products. Generally, before in vivo testing, standardized in vitro testing methods can provide equivalent results.

Critical Wavelength Test (FDA Broad Spectrum)

The purpose of broad-spectrum protection is to protect cosmetic products from both UVA and UVB radiation, which means that the test sample can resist more than 90% of the UVB/A spectrum from 290 nm to 370 nm.

In Vivo SPF Testing

ISO 24442:2011

EN ISO 24442:2011 is a standard in vivo method to determine the sunscreen UVA protection of cosmetic products.

ISO 24444:2019

EN ISO 24444:2019 a standard in vivo method to determine the SPF for cosmetic products. This method provides a basis for evaluating the effect of sunscreen products on human skin from erythema caused by ultraviolet rays of the sun.
