The Introduction of Cosmetic Preliminary Stability

Preliminary stability test, also known as screening test, accelerated stability, or short-term test, is the process of helping to screen formulas in the initial stage of cosmetic products development. Once the formulation and production process of the cosmetic products are determined, a series of accelerated stability tests will be used to predict the stability of the product and determine its shelf life and storage conditions. The parameters to be evaluated generally include appearance, color, odor, pH, viscosity, density, etc.

As a predictive study, accelerated stability testing generally uses more stringent conditions than usual to estimate the expiration date of cosmetic products. According to different transportation methods, transportation scales, and regulations in various regions, it is necessary to formulate a suitable stability plan. It should be noted that the results of accelerated testing studies do not always predict physical changes.

Preliminary Stability Test for Moisture Absorption

This test is used to determine whether cosmetic products are susceptible to moisture. The samples to be tested are placed in containers with different saturated salt solutions to maintain high relative humidity and controlled temperature to analyze their physical and chemical stability.

Preliminary Stability Test for Emulsions

For the emulsion, we use centrifugation instead of increasing the temperature to perform the preliminary stability test to avoid the emulsion breaking. The emulsification rate is proportional to the centrifugal speed, and a good emulsion does not show detectable oil phase separation until a certain period of time.
