The Introduction of Candida albicans in Cosmetic Products

Candida albicans is a well-known opportunistic pathogenic yeast that belongs to the human gut flora. Candida albicans is one of the few species of Candida that causes candidiasis in humans. There are several different morphological phenotypes for Candida albicans, such as opaque, GUT, and pseudohyphal forms.

Candida albicans leads to a series of illnesses, including skin or eye infections, superficial and local infections, as well as systemic infections. In the cosmetics industry, Candida albicans is a microorganism that should not be found in cosmetics, while its presence in cosmetics that come into contact with the skin would cause potential fungal infections. The CHROMagar™ Chromogenic media has been developed to identify different species of candida.

ISO 18416 Test Procedure

In the cosmetics industry, Candida albicans must not be present in category 1 products in an amount of 1 gram or 1 mL, and must not be present in category 2 products in an amount of 0.1 g or 0.1 mL. The established ISO 18416 procedure provides a standard method to detect Candida albicans in cosmetic products.

To better ensure product quality and safety for clients, it is necessary to perform an appropriate microbiological risk analysis. According to the potential alteration, pathogenicity of microorganisms, sites of use, and types of user, the customized microbiological risk analysis would be performed. In general, at least 1 g or 1 ml samples are required for the preparation of initial suspension. When we get the samples, we will use a non-selective liquid medium (enriched broth) to detect Candida albicans, and then isolate it on a selective agar medium. Due to the wide variety of cosmetic products in this application field, this method may not be suitable for every detail of some products, and other equivalent methods can also be substituted.
