The Introduction of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in Cosmetic Products

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a well-known encapsulated, Gram-negative, strictly aerobic, rod-shaped bacterium. As a common pathogen that causes infections, it can also be found in cosmetic products. This is because Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a gram-negative bacillus found in humid environments, so it is often found in some cosmetics with high water content. For example, cosmetic products for which Pseudomonas aeruginosa has been identified include shampoos, shower gels, face creams, makeup removers, toothpaste, and eye products such as contact lenses and disinfectants. What's more, Pseudomonas aeruginosa is considered opportunistic insofar that transfers to the cosmetic products is supported during manufacture. According to statistics, more than 40% of the recalled cosmetic products have found this bacillus.

ISO 22717:2015 Test Procedure

In the cosmetics industry, Pseudomonas aeruginosa must not be present in category 1 products in an amount of 1 gram or 1 ml, and must not be present in category 2 products in an amount of 0.1 g or 0.1 ml. The established ISO 22717:2015 procedure provides a standard method to detect Pseudomonas aeruginosa in cosmetic products.

When we get the samples, we will first suspend them in a concentrated broth containing ingredients that prevent the effect of preservatives in the products. After the suspension is incubated, it must be inoculated on Cetrimide agar plates to isolate colonies. Colonies that exhibit fluorescent yellow-green pigments under ultraviolet light will be suspected of being positive. Finally, to identify the isolated suspicious colonies, biochemical, Gram staining, and oxidase tests are necessary, while also growing them in the culture medium.
