Introduction of Yeasts and Molds

Yeasts and molds are two different forms of natural fungi that usually exist in plants. In the production process of cosmetic products, stagnant water, external pollution or improper drying and curing may lead to an increase in yeast and mold. And the rapid uncontrolled growth can lead to potential health risks. Therefore it is important to carefully manage their levels and prevent uncontrolled fungal growth.

ISO 16212 Test Procedure

Developed by the International Standards Organization (ISO), the ISO 16212 provides a standard procedure to test microbiological yeasts and molds in cosmetic products. According to the purpose of the test, a specific method or combination of methods specified in these standards can be selected.

Our test allows knowing the total amount of yeast and molds per volume unit (mL) and weight (grams) of the cosmetic products. When the cosmetic product is miscible in water, it would be diluted 1:10 directly in the neutralization solution verified by the diluent. When the cosmetic product is insoluble in water, it needs to be pre-mixed with the solubilizer (such as polysorbate 80), and then diluted 1:10 in the neutralization solution verified by the diluent. Subsequently, other dilution ratios of diluents can be obtained, and various diluents of different dilution ratios are aliquoted into agar or culture medium for testing. In general, the seeded culture plates are incubated at room temperature (25°C) for 3-5 days, and then the colonies developed are counted. In addition, cosmetics are generally treated with a neutralizer to verify the presence of yeast and mold. The final results are expressed in CFU (colony forming units).
